This was the issue -
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=506693

Used the sidux lirc-modules-source which then worked with m-a a-i lirc.

The only problem was that initrc was not created in /etc/init.d

So I put /usr/local/bin/lircd -d /dev/lirc0 into /etc/rc.local which got
it working.
