The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec.
Try appending the scale filter to your filter list,
e.g. -vf spp, scale instead of -vf spp.

Seriously some days I ought to slap myself. It did record and I did
watch the recorded bit in mplayer, everything that was suggested to do
was done and worked according to Adreas' expectations, right up but not
including being able to use mythtv to watch live tv.

I don't either, like I said this is sporadic.

I'm using an nvidia card based card, with a driver that I re-compile
every kernel update.

I think I know what this one is, I did a switch user into my own
profile and the other one had a browser and other apps open. The first
login controls the sound on this system, being the secondary login my
sound settings are changed from what they normally are. I did not
bother to see if there was any sound coming out as I had my speakers
turned off.

Again it did play, I mis-represented the result and will go back to my
report and fix that misdirection on my part.

Well the video and the drivers work and i just retried the file in
mplayer and there is sound.
