If you are using AC pass through then the trouble ticket indicates
that the methods in my wiki should work.

Basically, discover the spdif port and send the output directly to
that port.  No translation is done.  There are about 4 methods listed
in the wiki, one may work for you.  The most direct to hardware is
like this:

  pcm.!default {
       type hw
       card 0
       device 1
}
