My purchase was in the same timeframe.  The driver for 8.04 seemed to
be dodgy, so I just went with a PCI NIC (I had a bunch lying around)
for the time being, and was delighted to discover that the driver in
8.10 was solid.

I don't know why things went south in 9.04, and to be fair I don't
*know* it's the driver as opposed to the network manager or something
else in the chain.  I'll watch the skies for news that things have
gotten better; although to be honest my main reason for upgrading to
9.04 was because of how easy it was going to be to create all the
themes I was never going to get around to.
