If it's a "cold spare," you save one drive's worth of power and one 
drive bay.  Other than that, not that I know of, unless you have more 
than one array in the same box.  For example, if you have a RAID 1 and a 
RAID 5, or two RAID 5s, they can share one hotspare.  If it's a single 
array you might as well use RAID 6, I think.
