My pxelinux.cfg:

nfsroot=192.168.0.7:/pxe/frontend,ro,nolock,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nfsvers=3,tcp,intr
vga=791 splash=silent,theme:livecd-2007.0 console=tty1 quiet

The append option is all in one line.

Using this with an up-to-date Gentoo system (server and client) results
in not mounting the nfs root at all, because it thinks, the path is
"192.168.0.7:/pxe/frontend,ro,nolock,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nfsvers=3,tcp,intr"
and so boot fails.

That's why I modified /usr/share/genkernel/generic/initrd.scripts.
