I would have to say that's not true, in my experience. It still depends
on what kind of firewire card you have.

Host Controller

I have a JMicron-based PCIE-x1 card in my FE/BE, and it doesn't work
well at all. I've tried two different instances of the same card (it was
cheap) and neither worked. It works OK for channel changing (which is
why it's still in there), but I've never been able to record through it.
dvgrab doesn't work either (starts up OK and then barfs), so it's not an
issue with my Myth setup. On the flip side, I've got two firewire cards
in my desktop, one PCI and one PCIE-x1, both of which work well with
dvgrab:

04:02.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB82AA2 IEEE-1394b Link
Layer Controller (rev 01)
07:07.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6306 Fire II IEEE
1394 OHCI Link Layer Controller (rev 46)

So I would say that it still depends on exactly which Firewire card you
have.
