There are IR receivers which would allow this, but that particular one
does not look like one of them.

Most models like that one do code filtering right on the receiver.
That means that they only look for IR codes from the remote that they
ship with and don't alert the computer in any way when they receive a
foreign code.  Any model that claims to not need a driver is like
that.  It presents itself as a USB keyboard to the OS and cannot be
used for general purpose IR reading.
