I'm not sure about the distance he has to go, but putting a pipe of some sort 
in temporarily and blowing a conical paper cup through it (or sucking one 
through with a vacuum cleaner) has been known to work.

If it's a through shot, you might not feed the cat for a day or two, attach a 
string to the cat and put it's favorite food on the other side.

A ping-pong ball gun might help, or a good throwing arm.

Getting some 10 or 12' pieces of wood, or metal, pushing them through and 
taping a new one on when needed works as well.
