The key to long UPS runtime is never go above 1/4 of the recommended
power. And get a UPS with at minimum 2 9AH batteries.

In the past I got over 1 hour of runtime with a 2.83GHz core2 quad
backend on a ~$100 PCM King Pro 1000VA UPS. I am talking of just the
backend running and nothing else connected to the UPS. I have since
upgraded to a APC 1400XL that has 2 18AH batteries and supposedly I am
supposed to break 2 hours with that. However I have not tested that
yet. The power has not been off for more than 30 minutes since I have
installed the new UPS...
