Usually when a new version of MythTV comes out I'm thinking about some
hardware upgrade or another anyway, but this time it was software only.
I read everything I could find, planned for a big upgrade showdown, laid out
all my "ammunition" in front of me in preparation, and then ultimately threw
caution to the wind and did the upgrade. I didn't even bother to backup the
database, deciding "Heck! It's just TV shows!" and if I loose them it just gives
me an excuse to change some hardware.
The upgrade to MythBuntu 9.10 went off without a hitch. No problem at all.
Didn't loose a thing. All finished in less than 20 minutes. Database intact and
upgraded, recordings all there... couldn't have been easier. Even my remote
and sound still worked.
If I remember, there was some re-configuration, mostly of "new" or different
features, but even most of my old settings moved over to the new version.
YMMV obviously! Do a backup if there's anything you want to save. In my
case the system was well behaved and well proven to begin with, so I just
didn't have any issues.
Then I just did a fresh install on the frontend-only machines. That seemed as
easy as doing an upgrade.
