...oh I quite agree. Recompression with a modern codec is a very handy thing.

Everyone has their own requirements though and their own ideas of "big" and
"a lot". My own setup wouldn't be possible without the ability to convert
nearly all of my content into h264.

It's a bit of a delay. There's a bit of time between when I get posession of
a disk and when I can treat it like the rest of my mythvideo collection. 
However, the computer is doing all the work in the meantime. I'm just waiting
for it to finish.
