That's a good question... No idea...
It's a poor decision IMO ... probably a decision made a long time ago
when the internal player didn't play all file formats and somehow this
got forgotten and mplayer stayed.
As for why mplayer didn't give you any sound, you probably got an
error displayed in the log, but you didn't copy it here...
You need to configure mplayer to use ALSA.
Also, the mplayer in my repository supports VDPAU, but you need to
configure it to try vdpau codec first ; one way to do that is to
create a ~/.mplayer/config file with:

ao=alsa
# Default to try VDPAU output and codecs
vo=vdpau,xv,
vc=ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau,ffvc1vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,
