[mythtv-users] Want some cheese with that whine?

Note that this was stated by Paulin, who *uses trunk*.

Come, now. Exactly one person used the work "fork" in the -users
thread in question in an even partially-threatening manner:
<URL:http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/368050#368050>,
by some loudmouth whose name I didn't recognize after more than three
years reading the list.

(For those who didn't see it, the person that actually told Jean-Yves
Avenard to "fork" was developer Janne Grunau
(<URL:http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/dev/368008#368008>>)
on -dev!)

Smilies are the last resort of the snarky. Say what you mean and mean
what you say. If you conflate every non-developer who participated in
the above-mentioned -users thread with the (few, but real) whiners on
-users who want their way now Now NOW, then say so. Don't hide behind
punctuation.

Me? I see in that thread, as I do in 95% of the threads on -users, a
lot of respect paid to the developers' hard work. I hope I'm in that
category, too. I've answered numerous questions about how to use this
amazing application, one I have said--since about my second day using
MythTV way back in the dark ages of December 1995--is a few years
ahead of the so-called state of the art in the non-MythTV world. Along
the way I've filed bug tickets and even submitted one or two minuscule
and pathetically-inadequate patches.

I also use Jean-Yves' VDPAU patch on -fixes, and am not ashamed to say
so. The combination is extremely stable and does exactly what it
claims to do. Although I'm glad he took the time to do the backport,
I'm sure Jean-Yves would be the first to agree that 99% of the credit
goes to Isaac Richards, Mark Kendall, and other developers who
incorporated VDPAU into trunk in record time.

If there was evidence that the VDPAU backport had delayed 0.22 by a
single day I'd advise Jean-Yves to stop immediately. That has not been
the case. I read -dev and -commits, too. SVN has not exactly been
deluged with tickets from fools who somehow ignore the numerous and
prominent warnings against doing so and report a problem with the
backport there. Jean-Yves or someone else has handled the few
backport-related questions on -users. Hardly the "Human sacrifice,
dogs and cats living together . . . mass hysteria!" initially
predicted, no?

Again, for the record, I'm not calling for the backport to be made
official, or to fork MythTV, or (hopefully) being anything other than
very, very, very grateful for the developers' remarkable and ongoing
efforts on the wonder that is MythTV. I just don't want to be placed
in the big sack marked "whining idiots" that you apparently have
already filed the bulk of the readership of -users into.
