Kevin, I think that yes, I tried to follow some webpage from ubuntu
wiki. Perhaps I used a wrong guide, so if you can point me to a
definitive "how to install mythtv on Ubuntu" I will be grateful. 

I would be happy to uninstall mythtv packages, drop the database, and
try again.
