There's definitely something to be said for that if it interests you and 
you have the time for it.

I give my old stuff to needing/wanting members of the local LUG.

Agreed. But I'm sure Microsoft will come up with a reason why it can't. 
For the record, I still use my ~4 year old dual opteron 252 w/8G of RAM 
as my primary workstation and a ~2.5 year old core 2 quad as my mythtv 
backend. My ~7 year old PowerMac G4 tower still gets plenty of use, as 
does my ~5 year old PowerBook G4, so I'm not *all* about shiny and new... :)
