[mythtv-users] My Fastest MythTV Install Ever!

Today I reinstalled and updated my MythTV box for the fourth time in four years, and almost a year and a half since the last one. I used Mythdora 10.21, and boy was it smooth.

This was my first experience with a MythTV distribution, so don't take this as disparaging the other fine MythTV distributions. I have always used RedHat/Fedora, so Mythdora was a logical choice.

All three previous installs were done following Jarod's instructions, as as terrific and thorough as they were, it just can't compare with the smoothness of a respun distro.

Mind you, my setup wasn't very exotic. I have a PVR-350 and was using my plasma screen as a monitor, so it was a pretty vanilla install. Having installed it with Jarod's instructions, previously, did help me to breeze through the process as well.

Just to let you know, the install that was replaced was running FC6! While it was still stable, a few issues had surfaced:

1) I broke closed captioning on the very last install. Once Hans announced that he had fixed this issue for the PVR-350, I knew it was time to overhaul.

2) No widescreen TV support for the Nvidia graphics card. At the time of the last install, I had an AVI video card and was using the PVR-350's TV out. I had since switched to an Nvidia card and used a modern widescreen TV as my monitor. Unfortunately, the generic drivers didn't support 1360 x 768.

3) No widescreen skin support.

4) Capacity. Originally I had two 200 gig drives raided together for the system. As the system became popular with everyone else in the family, the 340 gigs of space was not big enough. So I replaced one of the hard drives with a 1 TB drive solely for the recordings, no raiding.

And now the system is happily humming along, and it only took me about 3 hours for full tweaking.

To the Mythdora Team and all other MythTV distribution teams, THANK YOU! Your hard work is appreciated.

 Beny
