I would agree with you that may well be even better.  Again could be variably done with a slider.  Has that method actually been 
implemented in a TV?

In my opinion, a blanking mechanism would be a much better solution
than an overscaling mechanism. I would prefer to see 1:1 pixel mapping
used and have the surrounding 1-2 pixels blanked to black to remove
any noise etc if actually needed.
