I did this and switched back to /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer, and the sound is
fine now.

What rpm?

# rpm -q -f /etc/modprobe.d/dist-oss.conf
module-init-tools-3.7-9.fc11.i586

module-init-tools includes modprobe, so it's required on all systems.
