A user was having the same symptoms when trying to "test" his system 
using an analog frame grabber that was not properly configured.  He 
tried to test it with /dev/null set as the audio input device, figuring 
once he got TV working he'd set up the audio.

So, make sure your frame grabber's audio input is properly configured.
