It's also possible to replace just the kernel with a 64-bit kernel and
keep the 32-bit userland software.  The OS kernel can then manage as
much memory as you need and although an individual processes will be
limited to 3GB memory usage, overall system usage can be much higher
(including the filesystem cache).  You don't need to do a
reinstallation just to replace the kernel.
