Hmmmm .... well, here's my experience (Sacramento FWIW)
My AntennasDirect 91XG (reputed to be the best deep-fringe UHF antenna 
available) did indeed pick up some VHF channels -- when they were 
broadcast as analog. When the high-VHF channels were providing a 
digital signal, nothing.
