I have used NX Free Edition server by NoMachine (http://www.nomachine.com/select-package.php?os=linux&id=1). I rides on top of ssh and is a one step process that gives you a desktop. Since it uses ssh, your existing port forwarding already is in place. You will find the desktop quite responsive, although you will not be able to watch any video. I have used this setup for over three years and have been very happy.
