I know the chances are pretty slim, but this looks really handy for my
needs so I got to ask...

Can you run smartmontools on the drives?

Most USB devices don't support the full (or partial sometimes) SCSI
command set for accessing the disks. I have found that if smartmontools
works, then all of my other programs will too.

Any info you can provide will be appreciated.
