Am I just really really lucky? I mean I have drives that are 6 years old or older that work just great. I have barracuda SCSIs from DEC machines that still seem to run OK. I have a 40 GB drive that spun 24 hours a day for 5 years and still continues to work. The only drives that have died on me had severe flaws to begin with (i.e. the IBM "Deathstar", the Quantum "Bigfoot", and a drive with a broken molex connector whose electronics eventually fried).
