I also gave up on getting a serial blaster to work, but I admit I didn't put
too much effort into it. I found out about the MyBlasters, which use the
serial port in the normal manner, and do not require LIRC. I had it working
ten minutes after I received it, and it has never missed a channel change.

Because they are externally powered, and do not rely on power from the serial
port, the MyBlasters put out much more IR energy than a typical serial
blaster. I can change channels from another room, not that I have any reason
to do that.

Unfortunately, the MyBlasters are no longer available, at least not new,
FleaBay might be a possibility. I'd certainly never consider selling mine :-)
