Stuff that was got me in the past:

1.  Software firewall.  Does it work with the firewall off?

2.  Once I didn't heed the warning in my /etc/hosts file:

# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain localhost masterbackend
::1             localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
