He said that the changes he made to the packaging of mythtv and nvidia
are a generic recommendation from nvidia and are slated for a later
release of Ubuntu but they weren't going to be implemented for 9.10.
It was primarily a packaging issue from what I understand. He went
ahead and made the change so that it will be easier to switch between
drivers without having to reinstall mythtv. This is very convenient
while vdpau is still in development and many people want to try
different versions of the beta drivers.

But to answer your question directly Jean-Yves set up his repository
initially to provide an unsupported backport that wasn't ever going to
be accepted upstream. As far as I know the few other patches he has
added have all been shared upstream but like the audio patch just
hadn't been committed yet. With .22 Jean-Yves had said that there
won't be much point in using his repository once .22 is out because he
doesn't intend on doing anything different from mythbuntu. I guess he
saw some value in the packaging thing so he decided to make that
change.
