I will be in this situation, as well.  Do you have any links that
describe what you did to build this?

This may sound strange, but I followed Phil :

Start on June 8th and work forward for most/all the zION posts.
The updated kernel config we used is in :
http://www.zoomthingie.com/wordpress/2009/08/11/zion-tweaking/
There is also a make file there as well that Phil provided. But I like mine
better : http://users.net1plus.com/bonkote/MythTV/zotacmake.conf

Once you have a base system built for the zION you can boot it and install
distcc on it : http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/distcc.xml
I also used ccahce which provided some speed improvements as well during
build : http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Ccache
And then there are my svn overlays : http://github.com/marct
