Is your audio setup analogue or digital (ie digital == spdif or over hdmi)

If the sound is analogue, the [ and ] buttons control volume.

The overall volume may also be controlled by a number of sliders on
your sound card's mixer. in a terminal/xterm run alsamixer and check
where the sliders are.
