To help narrow it down: when you're playing a video hit display on the  
remote or select on the controller and check the top right for details  
about the audio track. In the early days PS3s wouldn't recognize ac3  
audio in a ts mpeg so the display would show mpeg2 but nothing about  
audio. HDHR recordings used to play silent while PVR-200 stuff would  
play with audio and would show audio and mpeg details in the display.

Anyway, point is if you see audio info then it's a cabling/connection  
issue otherwise the PS3 doesn't like something about your files.  
Handbrake has a setting for PS3s so that would be a good transcoding  
option.
