Does not work from within Windows itself, do can't be scheduled. It is
not necessarily very user friendly, but it's not hard once you've done
it once or twice. It is able to make an image file onto an external USB
drive.

If he wants to backup only data, rather than the complete system and
programs, then look at Microsoft's SyncToy,
