I'm no expert but I would try the simplest possible xorg.conf first.

Thanks Steve, that has been tried, the TV defaults to 1024x768 and seems reluctant to increase its resolution.  Also the mythtv page 
on modelines does not seem to cover this set.  The modelines information readme is not the clearest however it seems to suggest that 
modelines do not apply to CRT TV's only CRT monitors which I suppose could be the case but was little surprising.

I have got these:
 gtf 1280 720 60
  # 1280x720 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 44.76 kHz; pclk: 74.48 MHz
  Modeline "1280x720_60.00"  74.48  1280 1336 1472 1664  720 721 724 746  -HSync +Vsync

 gtf 1920 1080 60
  # 1920x1080 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 67.08 kHz; pclk: 172.80 MHz
  Modeline "1920x1080_60.00"  172.80  1920 2040 2248 2576  1080 1081 1084 1118  -HSync +Vsync

Unfortunately they do not seem to work.
