When I'm looking for a graphics card to use with VDPAU I just find any
8000+ model that has the spdif audio pass-through will be fine. There
are so many models and brands, unless someone spent time and money to go
through them all, that all you will get from this sort of question is
"This is what I use" .. doesn't mean its ideal for your requirements.

I have used in the past:

Asus 8400GS 512MB
Asus 9400GS 1024MB
XFX 9800GTX 512MB
BFG 8800GTX Ultra 1024MB
XFX 8800GT 512MB
XFX Geforce 260 512MB

VDPAU is supported from the 8000 series upwards with varying degrees of
off-loading features. I find even the 8400GS can off-load enough work
from the CPU to allow me to play 720P on a Pentium 2Ghz with <10% CPU
usage. And they're so cheap!

YMMV
