I've seen where applications having the file open scrambles the file 
during a crash.  I'm not sure if it's the application or the file system 
that does it.  I use journaling file systems over non-journaling for 
system and home directories where possible, but that still doesn't 
appear to prevent it 100% of the time.  So I've gotten into the habit of 
mounting all the file systems that I possibly can as read-only (ro).  
It's a extra step to remount them read-write (rw) when I need to do 
software maintenance but better safe than sorry.  Mounting ro probably 
wont work for a home directory, but what you could do is symlink the 
file in the home directory to a real file on another partition that has 
been mounted ro.
