There is one super simple solution to picking your drives. 

If you're building an array, say 4TB for the heck of it. Then buy two extra 2TB drives over time and back your stuff up now and then.
All you need is a cheap used box running linux that you can fire up say weekly or even monthly, back up, shut it back down. 

Really, storage is all about backing up. It is live data after all.
