The first thing that would come to my mind when Firewire stops working is 
your local cable company. They are notorious for "updates" that break 
things, especially with F/W.

Not sure of the best way to go about checking for this, but that's 
probably the first thing I would suspect, if you have not done anything 
to your system.

If your cable operator has made any obvious changes, like new channels 
or changes to the lineup, this becomes a virtual certainty.
