You guys are in a better boat than me!

Since the latest few kernels my MCE receiver has basically stopped 
working at all, with only a few of the buttons on my remote giving any 
response at all, let alone multiples

Last good kernel for me was 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.x86_64 and my hardware is:

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0471:0815 Philips (or NXP) eHome Infrared 
Receiver,     using a PVR-350 remote
