I have pretty much the same system here, old PVR-350 + newer PVR-500.
In my case the patterns are more pronounced on the 350, the 500 is clearer
(but not as crisp as the plain TV).

I have the suspicion that the image artifacts are coming from some HF effects,
I still plan to confirm this by using plain YUV data via MPlayer.
And yes, my box is also freshly built, with the old components being
the TV Cards.
