[mythtv-users] Record only HD or prefer HD over SD

Michael T. Dean <mtdean at thirdcontact.com> says:

I know. That's why I wrote:
> But neither I nor Christian want to always record the first showing

Mike Dean continues:
> Sure, it's easy to say, "In the most-simplistic situation with one

But, what *are* the other failure cases? Please don't handwave and
imply we all understand the intricacies of the scheduler (I'll be the
first one to admit I don't, and have said so in the past) and are
blithely courting disaster regardless.

I've read the HOWTO section, more than once. Perhaps I am being
obtuse, but I do not come away from it knowing the "/lot/ of cases
where [what I am doing] will cause failures . . ." that you warn of
above. Yes, I acknowledge that I run the risk of missing a program if
the HD airing the scheduler skipped an SD airing for disappears from
the schedule; that's obvious. What other failure scenarios are there?

(Heck, as I mentioned in my earlier message, I even followed the
advice to--if daring to change channel priorities--lower undesirable
channels' priorities below the default 0, rather than raising
desirable channels' priorities above 0. As Simon asked, I'd still like
to know what the functional difference is, but I did so at least.)

I haven't seen these downsides in my four-plus years of MythTV use,
always with the same tuner setup (FireWire and over-the-air). Again, I
ask:

> If there is a better way of achieving my goal, I'd love to hear it.

(The "goal," for both Christian and me, being able to depend on the
scheduler to automatically pick the HD airing of a program over SD
airings without our needing to set up a custom rule or depend on
"Record only this airing.")
