Just to put this in terms that are clearer to those of us that are not
in tune (pun intended) with the lingo...

If there are multiple shows being broadcast on the same frequency
(mux/multiplex), a single (multi-record capable) card should be able to
record two, or more, shows at a time.

The limitations on this are the amount of data your hardware can handle,
and how many shows are available on the frequency at the time.

However, if the shows that you want to record are on different
frequencies, then you will need another physical tuner for each show
that you want to watch/record, as you can only tune a single frequency
at a time.

For example, in my area, the local ABC and NBC broadcasts come in on the
same frequency, but, CBS comes in on a different frequency.

This means that I can record whatever ABC, and NBC, are showing, at the
same time. However, if I wanted to record shows from ABC and CBS at the
same time, I would either have to choose between them, or have another
available physical tuner to get both shows.

Hopefully, that clears it up.
