FWIW, I sent a response to the -dev list one with a proposed alternative 
implementation that avoids adding YAUUS (Yet Another Usually Unnecessary 
Setting).

I don't mind the idea--I just hate settings.  :)

I'm pretty sure the approach would allow all the benefits you want, but 
without the setting.
