Managed to work this out with the help of your apt-cache tip.

I ended up apt-getting the specific version of mythtv-common i.e. apt-get install mythtv-common=0.22.0+fixes23565-0ubuntu0+mythbuntu3, which removed all the other mythtv packages that depend on it. Then I installed them and it pulled in the right version.
