Have you added RAM? Or are you using just the included 1GB?

The included 160 GB HDD seems almost too much for just a frontend, I'm 
wondering if eliminating it by netbooting or using a SSD might allow running 
the fan slower.

The Broadcom CrystalHD is, as John D. mentioned, another hardware decoding 
solution. It does duplicate the ION as a decoder, but since drivers for the 
XtalHD are very close (I understand)  it might be interesting to compare the 
two.
