By default yes, it means that they use a lot less processor power. Also, 
many brands of switches, when the processor gets overloaded, they fall back 
to broadcast instead of multicast. I have had to get several manufacturers 
to re-write their firmware to fix broken implementations of multicast.

If you can, use tcpdump on each machine.
Something like:

tcpdump -i <ethN> src or dst port <multicast portnum>

should show the packets entering (N being your interface id, <multicast 
portnum> being the port the multicast program was using)
