I applied the patch from the ticket 7759 ( t7759_repeat_pict_v2.diff ) 

And the recordings are watchable now.  The audio/video sync is not perfect, but before I was getting audio drop out.  Every once in a while I see a video issue where it appears the video is too far ahead of the audio and it "skips" or appears to jump some frames.  

So it appears that the patch is a acceptable workaround.  What are next step plans?
