Actually this isn't how they do it now and it is one of the main
reasons that 3D has made a come back in the theater. The people who
created the new RealD that the theaters use, only use a single
projector. Because of this you don't ever have the images for each eye
up at the same time. Also since they come from the same projector they
are perfectly aligned. This was made possible because technology
allowed for much faster projectors and polarization. They take a 24
fps film (48 fps including both eyes) then they alternate each
left/right eye frame 3 times. So the projector is going at 144 fps.
This is what allows for very sharp 3D with minimal discomfort to the
eyes. This is a big improvement over how they did in in the past with
dual projectors.
