What I do is I set both timed and automatic login in custom.conf and it
works.

Just add the following lines to /etc/gdm/custom.conf

[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=mythtv
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=mythtv
