Do you think there is space between studs on the l/r side of the open
space?  If it is wallpapered or textured, you can always route a strip
down it to tuck the wires into and re-surface it.  If there is no
open-air there...  I obviously would not recommend that for wood, but
sheetrock is cheap, and mud to resurface even cheaper...
