If not using surround sound (speaker setup), it may well be due to the 
fact that the show is produced with a 5.1-ch audio track for 
surround-sound setups and when you try to turn that into 2-ch audio for 
a stereo setup, the end result is not nearly as good as an audio track 
produced for stereo setups.  Note, also, that some shows actually 
include multiple audio tracks, so you may want to try using the OSD menu 
to switch to the stereo track, if it exists.

I find that captions/subtitles help a lot, too.  I always enabled them 
when watching shows.  :)
